Replacing brake pads

The front pads last approximately 50 thousand kilometers, and the rear ones 40 thousand. However, with a “sporty” driving style, this interval can be significantly reduced.

  • removed front wheel
  • unscrew and remove the mounting bolt holding the caliper pin guide
  • the caliper rises above the pads
  • the block retaining pad is detached
  • remove the inner, then the outer brake pad
  • the lower and upper springs are pulled out, fixing the guide
  • the brake piston is recessed into the working cylinder
  • if necessary, change the caliper pins and boot
  • new pads are being installed
  • and assembly in reverse order

Replacing brake discs

Brake discs last up to 80 thousand kilometers. However, if cracks, chips, deterioration are detected, steering wheel wobble occurs during braking, at speeds over 50 km/h, as well as their thickness decreases below factory installed minimum, they must be replaced immediately.

Front replacement technology brake discs for Hyundai Tucson:

  • remove the wheel from the brake disc replacement side
  • dismantle the front caliper
  • dismantle the bracket securing the caliper
  • drill out the bolts that secure the brake disc
  • We knock down the brake disc from the inside with a hammer, through a wooden or rubber gasket
  • We reassemble in the reverse order, while pressing the brake piston back
  • bleed the brake system.

Hello. We will replace the front brake pads on a Hyundai Tucson car.

Pads are changed when the lining thickness is less 2 millimeters. The condition of the pads should be checked once every 15 thousand kilometers.

Hyundai Tussan has wear indicators on the front pads. If the wear is critical, you will hear a squeaking sound when braking.

Step by step replacement

1. Remove the wheel.

2. Unscrew the lower guide bolt.

Unscrew and hold the guide pin from turning.

Open-end wrenches are needed for fourteen and seventeen.

3. Raise the caliper and remove the metal lining from the inner pad.

4. Remove the old inner and outer pads.

5. Remove the metal guide brackets for the pads. We clean the dirt underneath with a brush.

6. We recess the brake piston using plumbing pliers through the adapter. You can also buy a special one for this. tool.

7. Inspect the guide pins. Lubricate them, and if damaged, replace the anthers.

8. Install the guide brackets of the pads.

9. Install the inner and outer blocks. We only buy original pads.

10. Install the metal cover on the inner block.

11. Close the caliper and tighten the guide bolt.

The pads are changed on the axle; you cannot change the pads on just one wheel.

NOTE

Pay attention to the brake pad markings. Purchase new pads with the same markings. Front pads UBS for Hyundai Tucson are marked B11-03-065.

Check the condition of the brake pads every time maintenance(See “Checking the degree of wear of brake pads and discs”).

Brake pads require replacement when the linings are worn (the minimum permissible thickness of the friction linings is 2.0 mm), the linings are not firmly connected to the base, the working surfaces are oily, or there are deep grooves or chips.

NOTE

Wear indicators are installed on the inner pads of the front brakes. When the minimum permissible thickness of the linings is reached, the wear indicator comes into contact with the brake disc during braking, causing a squeaking sound, indicating that the brake pads have reached the limit of wear.

WARNING

Replace front brake pads only as a set - 4 pcs. (two on each side). Before replacing brake pads, check the fluid level in the main reservoir. brake cylinder. If it is close to the “MAX” mark, it is necessary to pump out some of the liquid (for example, with a medical syringe or a rubber bulb), because after replacement worn pads new levels will rise.

You will need: wrenches “14”, “17”, a wrench for wheel nuts, sliding pliers.

  1. Remove the left front wheel.

  1. Unscrew the bolt securing the lower caliper guide pin, holding the pin from turning with a second wrench...

  1. ...and lift the caliper up.

  1. Remove the inner pad cover...

  1. ...internal...

  1. ...and outer brake pads.

NOTE

This is what the front brake pads look like brake mechanism: 1 – internal and external brake pads; 2 – lining of the internal brake pad; 3 – brake pad wear indicator.

  1. Remove the lower pad guide...

  1. ...and the upper retaining springs.

  1. Press the piston of the working cylinder using sliding pliers.

USEFUL TIPS

Whenever you replace brake pads, be sure to check the condition of the protective rubber covers of the guide pin and the movement of the caliper relative to the brake pad guide. If movement is difficult, lubricate the caliper guide pins with grease. For this…

...remove the guide pin, lubricate it with grease and then lubricate the protective cover of the pin with grease. Similarly, lubricate the second guide pin and its cover. Install the guide pins in the reverse order of removal.

Replace the guide pin guards if they are hardened, deformed or torn.

  1. Install the retaining springs, brake pads into the guides and other parts in the reverse order of removal. To prevent self-turning of the caliper guide pin mounting bolt, lubricate its threads with an anaerobic thread locker before installation.
  2. Replace the brake pads of the right front wheel in the same way.
  3. Check and, if necessary, restore the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir.

USEFUL TIPS

After replacing worn brake pads with new ones, do not rush to immediately drive onto busy highways. It is possible that at the first intensive braking you will be unpleasantly surprised by the low efficiency of the brakes, despite the fact that branded pads are installed. The brake discs also wear out, and the new pads only touch them at the edges, practically without braking. Choose a quiet street or passage without cars and brake smoothly several times so that the pads get used and begin to fit the entire surface. At the same time, evaluate the effectiveness of the brakes. Try not to brake sharply for at least the first 100 km. When unused pads become very hot, the top layer of their linings burns and the brakes will not be as effective as possible for a long time.

Kit for replacing brake pads and discs.

Unscrew the rim and remove the wheel. The following view will open.

Unscrew the two caliper mounting bolts using a 14mm wrench.

After removing the caliper, we begin to remove the brake pads. pull from side to side, after which they can be easily removed. In this case, at the pads heavy wear and they are almost completely erased.

After this, remove the caliper holder housing by unscrewing the two mounting screws from reverse side. Most likely you will have to use a hammer; after a few blows, the bolts will give way and unscrew with some force. You can use WD-40 first.

The next step is to unscrew the two screws in the disk. It is possible that after long-term operation they could get stuck. if all else fails, use a drill.

After you are done with the screws, remove the disk. If it doesn't work the first time, use a hammer, lightly tapping it on the back of the disc.

Old and new brake discs for comparison.

Install the brake disc. To do this, we put the studs on it and clamp it with the screws that were previously unscrewed.

We install new parts that come with the brake pads.

We fix the caliper holder body in place and tighten it with the mounting bolts using a 17mm wrench.

Then we install the old block close to the cylinder. Using a wrench and a hammer, press the cylinder inward so that you can then install new brake pads and a brake disc into it.

We fasten the caliper and check the operation. If necessary, bleed the brake system.

This photo instruction demonstrates step by step process such repair procedure, How replacing pads, and replacing brake discs on Hyundai car Tucson (Hyundai Tucson).

Pads and discs should be replaced for several reasons, such as pad or disc wear, poor braking, or grinding noise. To carry out the procedure, you will need the following tools:

  • hammer;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • keys for 14 and 17;
  • a drill, if there is a need to drill out stuck screws);
  • WD-40, just in case something is rusty and difficult to remove;

Tools: syringe or rubber bulb, flat screwdriver, set of wrenches, set of sockets.

Note. Internal brake pads of brake mechanisms rear wheels are equipped with lining wear indicators, which emit a characteristic creaking sound when the vehicle is braking, in contact with brake discs when the overlays reach the minimum permissible thickness.

Before replacing the brake pads, the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels must be removed. working fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir if its level reaches the “MAX” mark. To carry out this operation, it is most convenient to use a rubber bulb or a large medical syringe. Make sure that the brake fluid intake tool is clean, otherwise contamination may enter the master cylinder reservoir, which in turn may cause it to malfunction or fail.

1. Remove the rear wheel.

2. Press the piston into the slave cylinder, pushing the caliper outward, inserting a large screwdriver between the outer brake pad and the caliper.

3. Unscrew and remove the mounting bolt of the lower caliper guide pin, holding the pin from turning with a wrench.

4. Raise the brake caliper rear wheel up.

5. Remove the outer brake shoe from the shoe guide.

6. Remove the inner brake shoe from the shoe guide.

7. Remove the two retaining springs from the brake pad guide.

Note. Each time you replace brake pads, pay attention to the condition of the rubber covers protecting the caliper guide pin. Also make sure that the movement of the caliper relative to the brake pad guide occurs without difficulty, otherwise you should lubricate the caliper guide pins with grease (lubrication is described in paragraphs 8, 9 and 10).

8. Remove the caliper guide pin.

9. Remove the protective cover from the guide pin.

10. Apply grease to the caliper guide pin, and then lubricate the inside surface of the pin protective cover. Apply lubricant to the second guide pin and its protective cover in the same way. Install the caliper guide pins in reverse order. Replace the protective covers if they are torn, hardened or deformed.

11. Before installing new rear wheel brake pads, lubricate them seats in the guide with waterproof grease.

12. Install new brake pads in reverse order.

Note. Prevent the bolt holding the caliper guide pin from unscrewing by applying an anaerobic thread locker to its threads.

13. Replace the brake pads of the second rear wheel in the same way.

14. Check and, if necessary, add brake fluid to the master cylinder reservoir.
