So, I'll share personal experience traveling around the USA (from Las Vegas to Monument Valley) by car, that is, along the west coast.
I'll start with a small one general information about our journey.
My husband and I traveled together at the end of September 2014, departing from the airport. At LAX airport (Los Angeles) we took a Mustang convertible in budget company Dollar, but we booked it in Moscow. For a week (during the car rental) we paid about 15 thousand rubles (about 375 dollars at the rate of 40 rubles per dollar), additional insurance, we did not order or pay for a navigator. During the trip there were no problems with the car, there were no accidents, the navigator was replaced by a tablet and downloaded Google maps.
Stayed at Los Angeles at a small motel (about $100 a night) called Best Inn, which was located near the famous Hollywood Boulevard, for one night.
The next day our road trip began.
At about 7 o'clock in the morning we began our journey to . The route, as noted above, was loaded in advance and the route was laid out. The main thing is to know which road you need to take (each road has a name and number).
The main road that leads to Las Vegas from Los Angeles- Barstow Freeway (Barstow Fwy), also known as road number 15. Travel time is approximately 5 hours. The landscapes are monotonous, the roads are good, civilization is present. Look carefully for signs that will help you understand what speed you are allowed to drive. Better not break the rules traffic V USA, since the fine in case of violation is quite decent. The road is not particularly diverse, there are no streetlights (so it’s better to go in daylight hours days). Mostly desert around. Along the way there will be small stops where you can have a snack or rest. We stopped almost at the end of the road to Las Vegas; We had a snack at a cafe called Denny’s. By the way, roadside Denny's are much cheaper than city ones. For breakfast, you can get a good breakfast (eggs, bacon and pancakes) for about $8. Portions are large, water is free.
We found ourselves on the main street of Las Vegas - the Strip (aka Las Vegas Boulevard) at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. There was still an hour before check-in at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino (we booked a place in advance), it was hot outside (it was a desert after all), and we headed to the outlet - Las Vegas Premium Outlets, where we stayed until the evening.
All life begins in the evening. Of course, you can play in a casino all day long, but in the evening the lights are on, city guests are walking and having fun, and in hotels there are slot machines, roulette, poker, and croupiers. Everything is like in the movies.
The good news is that once you stay in one hotel, you can move around to others. From our hotel there was a covered walkway across the street to the New York Hotel. It’s very interesting inside, cafes, casinos, entire recreated streets of real New York. You can go to any hotel and play there, they will even give you food and drink if only you stay to play.
We left at 8 am and started our journey to the Hoover Dam (Nevada). It takes about an hour to get there along road No. 95 (Great Basin Hwy), then turn off onto road No. 93 (same name). However, with a stop at a gas station and Denny’s, we arrived late, around 10:30. The Hoover Dam is something that amazes with its scale and scope.
In total, we stayed there for an hour and at 11:30 we started our way to the Grand Canyon. We drove along road No. 93, then smoothly got onto No. 40 and turned onto No. 180, which led us to the southern edge of the incredible wonder of the world.
By the way, the canyon is located in Arizona. The entire journey from the Dam to the canyon took approximately 300 kilometers and we covered the route in 4 hours. We paid $20 to enter the park and at 4:00 p.m. we parked our Mustang in the public parking lot.
To be honest, we arrived late in order to carefully look at several view points of the Grand Canyon and find the right angle for photography. amazes with its immensity and height. It is very scary to approach the extreme points of the canyon, as there is a cliff below. It was quite cool inside the park compared to Las Vegas (about 15 degrees). There are buses running throughout the park that take tourists to the main points of the south side of the Grand Canyon, however, in order to take advantage of this, it is better to come for the whole day, and not for two hours like we did.
At 7 o'clock we took pictures at our last point in the Grand Canyon and in complete darkness headed to the city of Page, where we had booked a hotel for 1 night. We had to drive about 80 kilometers through the park, without cars and without lights. I don’t recommend this kind of action to anyone, as this road is exhausting, in addition, there is a real danger of hitting deer, of which there are a huge number in the park, and it is expensive and winding. We have experienced this danger first hand.
To Page (about 250 km from the canyon), we first drove through the forest along the Grand Canyon (road No. 64), and then turned onto No. 89 and it brought us to Page at about 10 pm, taking into account the time change. We stayed at a motel (there are a lot of them), you can also stop at a piece famous road Route 66.
We left the motel at 8 am and headed to another attraction - the horseshoe ( Grand Canyon Horseshoe, which is part of the Grand Canyon. Travel time from Page is about 20 minutes from Page. It’s good that we went in the morning - there were few people and it was cool. Personally, we spent a lot of time on the horseshoe as we tried to get the right angle for photography. The place is incredibly beautiful, incredibly high. As a result, we were freed only at 10 am and headed to Monument Valley (Utah). We also wanted to visit Antelope Canyon, but there was little time, since we planned to return to Las Vegas on the same day.
From Page to Monument Valley - approximately 300 kilometers. We moved first along road No. 98, then along No. 160. The road is monotonous, mostly desert, sometimes mountains flash by (similar in structure to a canyon), there is no civilization. In these parts you can really feel the atmosphere of the Wild West - landscapes, weather, people, horses. And this is very cool! We arrived at the entrance to Monument Valley Park at about one o'clock in the afternoon. Paid $20 for entry. We were given a map with the route and we went to inspect the incredible huge buildings sticking out of the ground. At each point we stopped to take pictures, we drove with the roof open, so that our entire convertible and we, along with it, were in the sand. We rode around for a couple of hours and realized that we had to go home (to Las Vegas). Of course, two hours is not enough to explore all the monuments; you should spend at least 3-4 hours there.
In fact, from 15.00-15.30 we started our journey towards Las Vegas. We returned back along other roads - No. 163, No. 160, No. 89, No. 15. The entire journey was 420 miles, that is, almost 900 kilometers. We didn’t stop anywhere as much as we wanted to maximum quantity travel the route during daylight hours. The busiest route is No. 15, so we were in a hurry to get there as quickly as possible.
As a result, we arrived in Las Vegas around 10 pm and checked into the Grand Hotel, not far from the famous Fremont Street. The hotel is new, so there are no complaints about it. We just happened to be at Bike Fest, so all the motorcycle owners and related events were happening near Fremont. So it was fun. Fremont itself is a cool street, with a giant TV, tons of shops, street performers and all sorts of freaks. You should definitely take a walk down the street in the evening, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of celebration and fun.
We stopped in Las Vegas for one more day to take a break from the road and take a closer look at the city and casinos. In the afternoon we swam in the pool on the roof of our hotel, walked along the Strip, looked at hotels and casinos (each of them is worthy of attention, especially Cesar Palace), played slot machines and roulette, and looked at the fountains at the Bellagio. The next day at 9 o'clock we headed back to Los Angeles.
Our preparation for the road to the city of sin began six months in advance, and our path took us through Los Angeles and then to Las Vegas by car. We received visas in April, and planned to go in October. A head start of several months gave us the opportunity to book a hotel cheaper and. For which we spent only $1,240 ($840 for tickets and $400 for a 12-night hotel).
The city of sin, the city of lights, the city of casinos, the city where they never sleep and much more - this is all about Las Vegas. It's best to see for yourself. Before setting off on the road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas by car, we were awaiting a direct flight from Moscow lasting 12 hours and 50 minutes. We were met at the American airport by a friend who had been living there for almost 5 years. Here we ran into a hitch, and we had to urgently decide on the spot how to get to Las Vegas. We looked at the schedule of domestic flights, but had to discard them as an option. Without early booking - expensive. There are no buses to Las Vegas in the evening. At this point we had already left the airport, my friend wasted no time and took us to visit him. It's three o'clock on Saturday afternoon. The journey from Los Angeles to Las Vegas by car takes on average 5 hours. I had to abandon the guests and urgently look for a rental car; I wanted to get to the hotel this afternoon. We went to another airport and lost almost 2 hours of time. Los Angeles is famous for its heavy traffic. Upon arrival at the airport, 8 out of 10 rental companies were no longer working, and the remaining two had no reservations - there was no free car. We were lucky and one company agreed to give us a car.
A couple of nuances when planning the road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas by car:
- Americans don’t like debit cards, but ours was still accepted, but we learned about this already on the road to Las Vegas. Payment did not go through immediately. We were surprised when the manager let us go and said that he would sort out the payment himself.
- If the driver is under 25 years old, you will have to pay an additional 20 dollars (we agreed on 10)
- Whoever is driving is the one who pays, this applies to card payments. The machine is registered for one driver's license, in our case, the husband had to be driving during the entire trip to Las Vegas, therefore, his name should be on the bank card. You can add a second driver for an additional fee, but we decided to save money. Most likely, this is important in case of an accident or stop by the police.
- There are 2 options for returning the car, or you refuel yourself before returning the car full tank or you rent it as is, and they charge you a full tank at an increased rate from the rental company. It's cheaper to fill a full tank yourself.
- Don’t repeat our mistakes and book a car in advance, you can use the Skyscanner website. Or better yet, by plane or bus.
We left Los Angeles in the dark, but the road to Las Vegas was comfortable. Several lanes and good asphalt. Lighting is not everywhere, but due to the “flickers” built into median strips you feel like a plane coming in to land. Everything is clearly visible far into the distance. Gas stations are mostly located not along the highway itself, as is usual here, but at exits. Try not to refuel at them, prices vary greatly from city to city.

At 11 pm we entered Las Vegas, where the nightlife had just begun. All fatigue disappeared instantly, despite the long and tiring journey from Los Angeles by car. And then he was waiting for us.

I was convinced of this personally, having flown there once by plane, and also having driven the Los Angeles - Las Vegas route by car. During the trip I realized that even for in simple words“getting from Los Angeles to Las Vegas” requires considerable experience of traveling independently in the USA, which I will now share with you.
